Vigilantes (자경단) is an unofficial fan-made camera app. Capture photos and videos with three filters: Ballad of You, Symbol, and Kaleidoscope. You can also apply filters to photos and videos you choose from your library.

1. Take photos and videos

Tap Get Started on first launch and allow camera access.
Select Ballad of You, Symbol, or Kaleidoscope at the top.
Choose a lens or pinch to zoom. Use the camera-switch button to change between front and back cameras.
In Photo mode, tap the white shutter. In Video mode, tap the red button to start and tap again to stop.

Camera switching is unavailable while recording. On iOS 17.2 or later, the volume buttons can also act as a shutter.

2. Use a photo or video from your library

Tap the library button beside the shutter.
On first use, choose Download to get the photo library add-on (about 60MB). It needs an internet connection, and you can keep using the camera while it downloads.
Keep the app open until the download finishes. Leaving the app stops it; returning restarts it from the beginning.
When it’s ready, open the library and choose a photo or video using the system Photos picker.
For a photo, select a filter, preview it, then Save or Share.
For a video, choose a filter from the first-frame preview and tap Convert. Keep the app open during conversion; leaving stops it.
Preview the converted video, then Save, Share, or Try Another Filter.

Your original stays as it is. Results are center-cropped to 9:16 portrait or 16:9 landscape at 1080p, and videos run at up to 30fps. Sharing alone doesn’t save a copy to Photos.

3. Permissions and saved results

Camera: required for live capture.
Add to Photos: needed to save captures and filtered results to Photos.
Microphone: optional for video sound. Without it, live videos are silent.

Saved results go to the Photos app and stay there if you delete Vigilantes.

4. Language and troubleshooting

English and Korean are supported; other device languages fall back to English. To change the app language, open Settings → Apps → Vigilantes → Language (on older iOS, Settings → Vigilantes). The option may not appear depending on your iOS version and language settings, and the app has no language picker of its own.

No camera image: Allow camera access in Settings. If you denied a permission, the information (ⓘ) screen can also show Open Settings.
Cannot save: Check Add to Photos access and available storage.
No recorded sound: Allow microphone access. Imported videos may lose sound depending on the original file.
Download fails: Check your internet connection and free storage, keep the app open, then tap Try Again.
Conversion stops: Keep the app in the foreground and tap Convert again.
Slow or warm device: Pause capture or conversion and let the device cool.

Android

1. Capture

Allow camera access, choose a filter, frame the scene with the lens/zoom and camera-switch controls, then take a photo or start and stop a video. The volume buttons also work as a shutter.

2. Gallery photos and videos

Tap the gallery button beside the shutter. The first time, the app asks you to download an add-on, which comes through Google Play and needs an internet connection. Keep the app open while the add-on downloads and prepares.

Choose a photo or video in the system picker. You can preview a photo, then save or share it. A video is converted and previewed first, then saved or shared. Originals are not overwritten. Keep the app open during conversion. HDR video conversion is not supported on Android. The gallery add-on works only when the app was installed from the Play Store.

3. Permissions and results

Camera: required for capture.
Microphone: optional for live-video sound. Without it, videos are silent.
The app does not ask for broad gallery-read or storage access. Selected imports use the system picker.

Photos (JPEG) and videos (MP4) are saved to DCIM/Camera in your gallery and stay there if you remove the app.

4. Troubleshooting

No camera image: Allow camera access for Vigilantes in Android Settings.
Cannot save: Check available storage.
No recorded sound: Allow microphone access.
Add-on won’t download: Check your internet connection.
Slow or warm device: Pause capture or conversion and let the device cool.

The app includes English and Korean.

About the filters

Ballad of You: like the concert screens, people fill with letters against a depth-shaded black-and-white background. Supported iPhone cameras measure depth with LiDAR or TrueDepth; other cameras estimate it on-device. It’s a visual effect and doesn’t recognize who anyone is.
Symbol: bright lights get a glow, trails, and symbol-shaped bokeh. Try pointing it at lights against a dark background.
Kaleidoscope: the scene splits into layered facets, as if refracted through a crystal.
